Radical Science: A Visual Journey to the Frontiers of Knowledge

This piece is an artistic commission by the CCCB and four leading science institutions in our region (IFAE, IBEC, ICFO, and ALBA Synchrotron). The piece was commissioned by curator Irma Vilà to close the cycle of scientific lectures and artistic performances that gives the piece its name.

“Radical Science” takes us from the macroscopic universe and general relativity to the microscopic scale and subatomic worlds, on a visual exploration journey built from real experiments filmed on camera and inspired by Hamill’s visits to the research centers that promote this project: ICFO, IFAE, ALBA Synchrotron, and IBEC.

For this piece, Hamill dives into exploring the physicality and materiality of visual phenomena. Inspired by conversations with scientific researchers, they investigate the nature of images and their technical construction. Drawing from both artistic practice and scientific methodology, Hamill uses effects created directly in-camera, as well as phenomena of light and physics, crafting specific filming tools made in their studio.

The piece offers a personal view of the research fields of the four main scientific institutions in our territory; reimagining the world through quantum phenomena, matter, particle collisions, accelerated electrons, the human body, and black holes. “Radical Science” is the result of a collaboration between scientists and artists that reflects the shared curiosity and experimental drive at the heart of both disciplines, aiming to amplify the poetic dimensions of scientific imaginaries.

Hamill Industries are the Barcelona-based artists Pablo Barquín and Anna Díaz. Over their ten-year career, the duo has created videos, installations, and stage productions. Their artistic work puts experiential storytelling at the heart of the creative process, allowing the choice of format to emerge organically. This transmedia flexibility is made possible thanks to the extensive research they carry out in their studio, where they develop cutting-edge tools to support their vision.

Hamill Industries recently created the visual proposal “Mere Mortals” for the San Francisco Ballet, designed the creative and visual direction for Floating Points, with whom they have toured since 2015, and developed striking visuals and installations for both film and live shows. Their notable work includes collaborations with the San Francisco Ballet, Sónar Festival, CCCB, ARS Electronica, 180 Strand (London), Mira Festival, Cosmocaixa, Filmoteca de Catalunya, Caixaforum, and the Barbican Museum in London.
